The Petrie Cemetery is located south of State Route 29 at the west edge of Celina, Ohio and at the corner of Sycamore and Portland Streets, Jefferson Twp., Mercer Co. It is a very old fenced-in cemetery donated for a public burial ground and was platted in 1839 as an out lot. Rufus Stearns and James W. Riley also platted the town of Celina.

The cemetery is adjoining the George Petrie farm. George was born August 7, 1821 in Lancaster Co., Pennsylvania. After the Petrie family left Pennsylvania they located in Indiana for a short time before coming to Ohio. He was married twice and became the father of several children. Three of his sons were carpenters and constructed many bank barns in this area including one on their fathers farm at the west end of Celina along State Route 29 where the V.F.W. and Jacksons' garage are now located.

One of George's sons, William Henry, but known as Henry, married Mary Mosier. Their son was Newton Petrie, the father of Clarence of Ft. Wayne, Gladys Fetters and Lawrence Petrie of Celina.

Mabel Beachler remembers visiting the Petrie Cemetery many times with her mother when quite young as her great grandparents, Hezekiah K. Trenary and his wife Elizabeth Handel Trenary, are buried there. Elizabeth's name is not on their stone, only the word "Grandma". Nancy, their daughter, was also laid to rest there.
