if any of that is indexed?)

The front page this week carries a 1913 photograph with the accompanying
article...

This is only part of the picture! The entire picture is too large to print in
the paper. It is 6 inches high and 38 inches long. The photo is of the entire
Versailles student body, grades 1 through 12. It was taken on May 9, 1913 in
front of the old school building which stood where the Versailles Elementary
school now stands. There are 240 people in the photo.

J.D.Weaver got this picture from his aunt, Florence Weaver, who lives in
Grayling, Michigan. Florence was married to Don Weaver, who is on the picture
but cannot be identified. J.D. also believes his father, George, is on the
picture, but he has not been identified either.

J.D. is hoping that there are people in the area who might be able to identify
those in the picture. Maybe some of your aunts, uncles, parents, grandparents,
great-grandparents or even you (if you're old enough) are on the picture.

J.D.Weaver took the original photo to Tigereye Design who made enlargements for
display around town. These enlargements have each of the 240 students numbered
so you can fill in the blank for anyone you can identify. They are on display
at John's IGA, Hotel Barber Shop and Laura's Photography. Stop by one of these
locations and see if you can identify anyone.

*****************************************************************
Many of us know or at least know of Lois Ann Baker of Versailles. Lois Ann and
her son Jac have done a tremendous amount of genealogical research in DCO and
are responsible for several publications. Lois Ann's mother passed away earlier
this year and the following appeared in this week's Policy:

                      CROSSING THE BAR

               Sunset and evening star,
And one clear call for me!
And may there be no moaning of the bar,
When I put out to sea.

But such a tide as moving seems asleep,
Too full for sound and foam
When that which drew from out the boundless deep
                    Turns again home.

               Twilight and evening bell,
                    And after that the dark!
And may there be no sadness of farewell,
                    When I embark.

For tho' from out of our bourne of Time and Place
The flood may bear me far,
I hope to see my Pilot face to face
When I have crossed the bar.

"Darke County Fair Still Great After All These Years

"On Nov. 24, 1853, some thirty citizens from all parts of Darke County met at
the Darke County Court House in Greenville, Ohio, and organized the Darke
County Agricultural Society. Within a year this society had 320 members in
Darke County and the first Darke County Fair was held in the 'Garst Woods'
presently the location of the Garst Museum, North Broadway, Greenville, on
September 7 and 8, 1853.

"The newspaper at that time, THE MAD ANTHONY, published in Greenville, had this
to say about the first Darke County Fair in its issue of Sep. 14, 1853; 'On the
whole the first Darke County Fair reflects great credit upon our county of
Darke and should inspire every citizen with zeal in this cause. We anticipate
having one of the largest county fairs in 1854 that was ever held in the State
of Ohio. So, why not call it THE GREAT DARKE COUNTY FAIR after this date?' No
doubt this is how our county fair was named The Great Darke County Fair.

"The fairgrounds were moved in 1858 to where Oakwood Street is now located, and
then in 1870 to its present location at 800 Sweitzer St. No Darke County Fairs
were held in the years of 1862 and 1863 due to the Civil War and in 1949 due to
the polio epidemic that existed at that time.

"The Darke County Fair continues to be great year after year, upholding the
tradition began by the people of Darke County in 1853. The 1996 fair will run
for nine days and nights, Aug. 16 through Aug. 24, at the fairgrounds. The
140th annual Darke County Fair will include exciting events, exhibits and
programs such as the Diamond Rio show, free gazebo entertainment, harness
races, tractor pulls, motorcycle races, miniature horse and draft horse show,
llama show, a mammoth Junior Fair and much, much more! Hours are 7 am to
midnight, and admission cost is $4, under 16 free with an adult. There is free
parking on the fairgrounds when space is available.

"Come to the Great Darke County Fair and see why it's called the 'Greatest
County Fair on Earth.' "
