Information Page

The burials included in this database were mostly published in the Darke Co., Ohio, area newspapers (specifically The Arcanum Times and The Greenville Daily Democrat, perhaps others). These listings were presented on the e-mail list for the county by Carolyn L. Frazee, Billy Baker, and Lori Fortner, but the list messages were not archived. Phyllis Crick of the Darke County Genealogical Society corrected some of the lists. Most of the Cemeteries in Darke Co. were read in the 1960's. Only a few have been re-read in more recent times. Therefore, these listings of burials as reported in the local newspapers are valuable additions to the published volumes of inscriptions. Phyllis also reports that the Genealogical Society is accumulating these lists for the Society's Archives and they have more than are presented here.

Unfortunately, many of these were transcribed from clippings so the exact issue date and name of the paper was unknown. Dates of burial were often noted while other lists just had names, and sometimes ages were noted and sometimes not. In simpler terms, "what you see is what you get." There is no further information unless you visit the cemeteries yourself. Since the order of names in a listing -might be a clue- as to what part of a year someone was buried, these lists have not been alphabetized. You will also note that most of these cemeteries were in the southern part of the county and most townships in the north are not listed at all.

These burial lists were entered by cemetery and the cemetery names have been used as the source/researcher of the information. Therefore, it was possible to use the cemetery names as a separate index and that index replaces the usual researchers' index.

However, the township where a cemetery is located often provides significant clues about family connections. Therefore, township names have been retained, and those township names were added to the Surname Index entries in the form [NAME OF TOWNSHIP] TWP. All townships are not included (see explanation above). The townships will be indexed by their names and mixed in with the surnames. If you think you know the township where someone died, you can check if a burial is listed by looking for the name of the township: Adams, Allen, Brown, Butler, Franklin, Greenville, Harrison, Jackson, Liberty, Mississinawa, Monroe, Neave, Patterson, Richland, Twin, Van Buren, Wabash, Washington, Wayne, and York. You might also be helped by the maps, links, and other information at Darke Co. Lands.
