From Michael Boo's Blog:
Mandarins are next with "Prophecy," an original music book written by Key Poulan. The sections are titled, "Ancient Prophecy." "The Guardian," "Sacrifice" and "Doomsday/New Dawn."
The show is based on the Mayan culture of 5,000 years ago. As you know, the Mayan calendar expires this year. However, there's disagreement about what that means.
The show starts with a Mayan chieftan atop a pyramid imploring the tribe to offer a ritual sacrifice.
The pyramid is one of the tallest sets we've seen in recent years. It's been awhile since we've had an original show by Poulan.
Tubas are putting out some major volume.
Someone is about to get it...sacrificed at the alter atop the pyramid. May have been someone who missed their drill set.
But in an act of charity, another person took their place and threw themselves into whatever one throws themselves into on top of a pyramid.
The ritual chanting and accompanying drumming is quite effective. Poulan is exploring the disintegration of the culture here, as people face away from what's going on around them and become increasingly militaristic and bloodthirsty.
Kind of like when corps members run off the field for lunch break.

"Nice energy from the corps to start the show. Very tasty horn solo. Upper brass is sticking out a little during the quiet moment. May be a sign of more conditioning work needed to get their breath under control after the fast paced opener. Drum line is pretty solid so far, enough so to get this brass player's attention, at least. You don't see that every day on a drum corps field. Great effect. I also like that they cut it down from Stanford as it was pretty long earlier in the season. Oh, and did y'all notice Mandarins is marching a cymbal line? Rock on. Is this the year of numerical drill forms? Even Boston has a Roman numberal moment in their visual. Yeah, Mandarins! Very powerful performance." -- kevingamin, on drumcorsplanet

"Show title is Prophecy and is about the Mayans predicting the apocalypse. I like the body work in this show a lot and think it's the strong point for these kids. They seem to enjoy doing that a lot. Clean up the marching and this will move up where this corps use to be at. Drum line is strong and their sound is better than last year as well as their volume. I don't understand the storyline during the ballad when one guard girl stops the chief dude from doing something to the another guard girl. Don't know if that was a sacrifice attempt or not. It's also poorly staged and hard to see all the way in the back. The chanting section is a cool idea but I feel it's too long. Crowd dug it though. Really liked the eclipse flags and the impact they are presented at. Viewed at all three shows." azul, on drumcorpsplanet
