Methodist Hospital Family Practice Residency
program receives a five-year accreditation
SACRAMENTO, April 1, 2002 - Since 1995, the Methodist Hospital Family
Practice Residency program has been producing highly skilled primary care
physicians. Under the direction of six quality, board certified teaching
physicians, the Methodist Hospital Family Practice Residency program is considered
one of the best in the country with approximately 200 to 250 medical graduates
applying each year. Out of that number, only seven are selected for training.
And the training is superb! In the past three years, every graduating resident
passed the board certification exam the first time around.
Now this accredited and nationally
recognized three-year program of excellence has even more to boast about.
They recently received notice from the Accreditation Council for Graduate
Medical Education (ACGME) that they have been accredited at the highest level
for a maximum of five years with no citations or concerns. “Out of the 493
family practice residency training programs around the country, very few
were able to achieve such a level of accreditation,” says Amir Sweha, MD,
Program Director. “You really have to have the perfect program to receive
no citations or concerns from ACGME. This accreditation reflects the quality
of Mercy physicians, as well as the quality of resident training. We are very
proud of and grateful for the hard work of our teaching physicians, including
the volunteer faculty,” says Dr. Sweha.
In a congratulatory letter to
Dr. Sweha, Mary Alice Parsons, Executive Director of ACGME said that she
could count from memory “the few programs that have had no citations in my
20 plus years of sending out the [accreditation] letters.”
There are 21 residents in the program
who receive their primary care training at the Mercy Family Health Center,
and Methodist and Mercy General Hospitals. “This is huge news for the program,”
says Mercy Family Health Center practice administrator K.D. Lowe. “We are
very delighted to have these highly-qualified Mercy physicians provide care
to our patient population here at the Mercy Family Health Center. We feel
our health center offers the highest quality of care because of what the
academic environment brings to the medical community.”
Third-year resident, Don Corpus,
MD, will be graduating in June. In addition to his training, he is also the
chief resident of the program. Dr. Corpus says he applied to the Methodist
Hospital Family Practice Residency because he felt it was one of the best
programs to offer exactly what he was looking for. “I looked at 25 different
programs in California, Arizona and Utah, and the Methodist Hospital Family
Practice Residency program had the best balance of people, work and area,
which was important to me. I wanted my residency in a community-based program
and as far as I am concerned, this program is the best. You feel like a part
of a team and that’s why the program works so well.”
