The Mercy Family Health Center is the residency program's model practice unit wherein residents, core faculty, and health professions students cooperate in health care teams and function as a group practice. First-year residents spend one to two half-days per week in the Center, second-year residents two to three half-days, and third-year residents, three or more. Supervision in the Family Practice Center is provided by both core and volunteer family practice faculty as well as other health professionals, such as a clinical psychologist, a podiatrist, and a pharmacist.

The Mercy Family Health Center offers care for a wide variety of patients in our community. Many hospital employees come to our clinics for their health care and we conduct all new employee health physicals for the Mercy Healthcare Sacramento system.

Each resident is assigned to a group of patients. Families are kept together in the clinic. Patient continuity is addressed through the use of health care teams. Residents have the opportunity to build their practices by adding patients to their census. We offer a full range of services and residents become skilled in a number of areas including:

Other trainees benefiting from the educational resources of the Mercy Family Health Center include third- and fourth-year medical students from medical schools throughout the country. The Mercy Family Health Center offers many opportunities to enhance academic and clinical experiences. A well-established and current library is available in the Center itself, as well as computer linkages for medical reference research and internet based patient care support. Because of the variety of clinical opportunities, the Family Practice Center is anticipated to be among the most valuable learning resources for the residency.

The patient population for the Mercy Family Health Center is ethnically and culturally diverse, with a broad spectrum of ages and clinical programs from prenatal
care to geriatrics. The patient population includes:

Asian                             20%

African American           10%

Hispanic                         20%
