Imagination Takes Flight

Entry built for the third annual  River Otter Amphibious Race, August 11, 2001.

Designer / Builder / Pilot: Peter Hanely  hanelyp@calweb.comHome Page

Vehicle description:

Built very much Salvage Yard style mostly from parts and materials discarded from others.  The framework is a combination of steel, aluminum, and wood, held by bolts and screws.

Two 20x1.75" 'coaster brake' wheels are mounted to a 1/2" (closer to 3/4" OD) black steel pipe axle in front.  A head tube and fork assembly was cannibalized for the bearing this axle rides on.  A hub from yet another wheel was modified into a fitting to attach a freewheel to the axle.

A steering fork is mounted behind the seat with extended handlebars reaching over the pilots shoulders.

The intention is to wrap this mechanical abstraction in a shell patterned after the  N1 star fighter.  This shell would then provide floatation for water crossings.  The engine pods will be, under current plans, large inflated pontoons, providing balance and emergency floatation.

These photos were taken July 7, of an incomplete vehicle.
