| First
Time Configuration |
1. The first time you run
Netscape, you will be prompted to create a new profile. Each
profile has your settings for browsing the Internet and reading
e-mail and Usenet news. Click Next.
2. Enter your name as you would like it to appear in the Full Name
field. Enter your CalWeb e-mail address in the E-mail Address Box.
Then, click Next.
3. A screen pops up asking for the name of the profile and the
location. Click Next.
4. Enter smtp.calweb.com
for the name of the outgoing mail server. Click Next.
5. Enter your CalWeb login name as the Mail Server user name (i.e.
joeuser,
no @calweb.com). The incoming mail server is pop.calweb.com.
Make sure Mail Server type is set to POP3. Click Next.
6. Enter news.calweb.com
as the news server if you are directly connected to CalWeb through
dial-up, ISDN, or DSL, or newsreader.calweb.com
if you are connecting from outside CalWeb's network. Make sure
port # is set to 119
and that "Secure" is not checked. Click Finish. |
| Adding
A New E-Mail Account |
By design, Communicator
is set up to check one mail account. In order to check multiple
e-mail accounts, you will need to set up multiple profiles. To set
up the profiles, click on Start, then Programs, then
Netscape Communicator, then Utilities, then User
Profile Manager. Click on New to create a profile. Then
follow
the instructions above for adding a new profile. Then,
whenever you start up Netscape Communicator, you will be prompted
for which profile to use. |
| Verifying
E-mail Account |
1. Click on Edit
and select Preferences.
2. If you see a plus sign or an arrow pointed to the right next to
"Mail & Newsgroups", click on it to change it to a
minus sign or a arrow pointed down to expand the list.
3. Click on Identity and verify the following:
- Your name: User's
Real Name
- E-mail address: Full
e-mail address (i.e. joeuser@calweb.com)
- Reply-to address:
Leave Blank.
- Organization: Blank
or name of company (optional)
4. Click on Mail Servers.
5. Under Incoming Mail Servers, select pop.calweb.com
and then click on the Edit button.
6. The General tab should be selected. Verify the
following:
- Server name: pop.calweb.com
- Server type: POP3
Server
- User Name: The mail
account login name (all lowercase, no @calweb.com)
- You may also want to
check off "Remember Password" and "Check for
mail every 10 minutes".
7. Click OK to exit
out of mail server properties.
8. Under "Outgoing Mail Server", check the following:
- Outgoing mail (SMTP)
server: smtp.calweb.com
- Outgoing mail server
user name: Your CalWeb login name (all lowercase, no @calweb.com)
- Under "Use
Secure Socket Layer (SSL) or TLS for outgoing messages",
make sure that Never is dotted.
9. Click on OK. |
| Multiple
E-mail Accounts |
By design, Netscape
Communicator can only check one e-mail account. To check multiple
accounts, you will have to set up multiple profiles. To set up the
profiles, click on Start, then Programs, then Netscape
Communicator, then Utilities, then User Profile
Manager. Click on New to create a profile. Then follow
the instructions above for adding a new profile. Then,
whenever you start up Netscape Communicator, you will be prompted
for which profile to use. |
| Spam
Filtering |
| CalWeb employs a Spam
filtering system called Spam Assassin which marks suspected Spam
messages with the word *****SPAM*****
in the subject line. To transfer the messages to the Trash folder,
follow these instructions while in the Messenger portion of
Netscape:
1. Click on Edit,
and select Message Filters.
2. Click on New to create a new filter.
3. For filter name, enter “SPAM Mail”.
4. On the line that
begins with "If the", make sure that “subject” and
“begins with” are selected in the respective pull-down boxes.
Enter *****SPAM*****
in the blank.
5. On the line that begins with "then", click on the
down arrow and select "Delete". Your screen should look
as follows:

6. Click OK to save the mail rule.
7. If necessary, highlight the "SPAM Mail" on the
Message filters screen, then click on the arrow pointed up so that
the rule is at the top of the list.
8. Click OK to close the
This message filter will
move any messages that appear to be spam to the Trash folder of
Netscape.

| File
Attachments |
To send a file
attachment
While composing a message, you can click on Attach
button and select File... or you can select File,
then Attach, then File... . A dialogue box will come
up allowing you to select the file that you want to attach to the
message.
NOTE: Consider
the end user. Large attachments take a long time to both upload
and download. Attachments larger than 3MB may be rejected by the
mail server.
To open a file
attachment
File attachments will appear at the end of the message. If you
double-click on the file attachment, Netscape will open up the
file in another browser window. Alternatively, you can right-click
on the attachment and select Save Link As... . A Save
As... window will appear, allowing you to save the attachment
to your computer.
Alternatively, you can
click on the paperclip icon at the beginning of the message. This
will show the file attachments as icons at the bottom of the
screen. By double-clicking on the icon, you will open up the
attachment. Alternatively, by right-clicking on the icon, it will
give you the options of either opening the file attachment or
saving the file attachment to your computer.
WARNING!
Many computer viruses can be transmitted through file attachments.
Before opening a file attachment, be sure you know who is sending
you the attachment and if you were expecting the attachment. It is
recommended that you have a virus-scanning program installed and
the latest anti-virus definitions installed. CalWeb is not
responsible for any damage to your computer if you open an
virus-infected file.

Message
Checking Interval
Click on Edit and select Preferences. If necessary,
click on the plus sign next to Mail & Newsgroups to
make it a minus sign and expand the list of selections. Select Mail
Servers. Under Incoming mail servers, select the pop.calweb.com
and click on the Edit button. Make sure that the General
tab is selected. Make sure that "Check for mail" and
enter a interval in minutes. Click OK, then OK
again.
Prompt
For Password
Click on Edit and select Preferences. If necessary,
click on the plus sign next to Mail & Newsgroups to
make it a minus sign and expand the list of selections. Select Mail
Servers. Under Incoming mail servers, select the pop.calweb.com
and click on the Edit button. Make sure that the General
tab is selected, then check to see that Remember Password
button is checked. Click OK, then OK again.
Mail
Left On Server
If you are leaving messages on the server: Click on Edit
and select Preferences. If necessary, click on the plus
sign next to Mail & Newsgroups to make it a minus sign
and expand the list of selections. Select Mail Servers.
Under Incoming mail servers, select the pop.calweb.com
and click on the Edit button. Click on the POP tab.
Make sure that Leave messages on Server button is not
checked. Click OK, then OK again.
To leave a copy of
the message on the server: (not recommended) Click on Edit
and select Preferences. If necessary, click on the plus
sign next to Mail & Newsgroups to make it a minus sign
and expand the list of selections. Select Mail Servers.
Under Incoming mail servers, select the pop.calweb.com
and click on the Edit button. Click on the POP tab.
Make sure that Leave messages on Server button is checked.
Click OK, then OK again.
IMPORTANT!
If you elect to leave mail on the server, we highly recommend that
you periodically check your e-mail box using the CalWeb
web mail interface to delete messages that are no longer
needed, otherwise excessive disk usage charges will occur. (Note:
Be sure to hit the Empty Trash button before logging out of
the web mail interface to remove the deleted messages from the
Trash folder.)
Hang
Up After Downloading
This feature is not available under Netscape Communicator.
Large
Message
Click on Edit and select Preferences. If necessary,
click on the plus sign next to Mail & Newsgroups to
make it a minus sign and expand the list of selections. Select Disk
Space. In "All Message" section, check off
"Do not store messages that are larger than" and enter a
size in KB. Click OK.
Once this option is
activated, whenever you download a message that is larger than the
set size, you will see the first few lines of the message followed
by: "Truncated! This message exceeded the Maximum Message
Size set in Preferences, so we have only downloaded the first few
lines from the mail server. Click here to download the rest
of the message." When you click on the here, the
entire message is downloaded to your computer.
IMPORTANT!
This will leave the large messages on our mail server. You should
periodically check your mailbox using the CalWeb
web mail interface to check and delete the large messages,
otherwise excessive disk usage charges will occur. (Note:
Be sure to hit the Empty Trash button before logging out of
the web mail interface to remove the deleted messages from the
Trash folder.)
Message
Splitting
Netscape Communicator does not support splitting a large message
into sections.
Send
Messages Immediately
Netscape Communicator automatically sends out messages when the
Send Message button is clicked.
Outside
Access to CalWeb's Mail Server
If you are connecting from outside of CalWeb's network in order to
access your e-mail, it is recommended that you use your provider's
outgoing mail server. Alternatively, to use CalWeb's outgoing mail
server, click on Edit and select Preferences. If you
see a plus sign or an arrow pointed to the right next to
"Mail & Newsgroups", click on it to change it to a
minus sign or a arrow pointed down to expand the list. Click on Mail
Servers. Under "Outgoing Mail Server", check the
following:
- Outgoing mail (SMTP)
server: smtp.calweb.com
- Outgoing mail server
user name: Your CalWeb login name (all lowercase, no @calweb.com)
- Under "Use
Secure Socket Layer (SSL) or TLS for outgoing messages",
make sure that Never is dotted.

| Message
Headers |
Occasionally, it may be
necessary for you to send us the complete message headers. These
headers contain the complete path that the message took through
the Internet rather than just the From, To, Subject, and Date that
you see as part of the message. To send us the complete message
headers, while in Communicator Messenger, click on View,
then Headers, then All. This will display the full
message headers. Select the message which you want to forward,
then click on Message, then Forward As, then Inline.
To restore normal message viewing, select View, then Headers,
then Normal. |

Configuration |
| To set up Netscape to
read Usenet news, follow these steps:
1. Click on Edit
and select Preferences.
2. If necessary, click on the plus sign next to Mail &
Newsgroups to make it a minus sign and expand the list of
selections.
3. Click on Newsgroup Servers.
4. You should see a list of news servers. The name of news server
should be news.calweb.com
if you are connecting directly to CalWeb or newsreader.calweb.com
if you connecting from outside CalWeb. To add a new news server,
click on the Add button and enter the following:
- Server: news.calweb.com
if you are connecting directly to CalWeb, newsreader.calweb.com
if you are connecting outside of CalWeb.
- Port: 119
- Supports encrypted
connections (SSL) - Leave unchecked
- Always use name and
password - Check off only if you are connecting from outside
CalWeb, otherwise, leave unchecked.
5. Click OK, then
OK again.
