Netscape Communicator 4.0-4.08

Macintosh Users: While these instructions were written for the Windows version of Netscape Communicator, most of it also applies to the Macintosh with some minor changes. In the Preferences screen, instead of using a Plus for a compressed list and a Minus to indicate a expanded list, the Macintosh uses an arrow pointed to the right to indicate a compressed list and a arrow pointed down for a expanded list.

NOTE: This is an obsolete version of Netscape Communicator that is no longer supported by CalWeb Internet Services or Netscape Communications. The information provided here is for reference purposes only. The latest version can be downloaded from Netscape's Home Page. In addition, if you are using a version prior to 4.06, you will receive a warning about Verisign Certificate Expiration when visiting secure web sites. For more details, see the Netscape or VeriSign sites.
First Time Configuration
Netscape Communicator uses profiles in order to separate user's profiles.

1. You will be prompted to create a new profile. Click Next.
2. Enter your name as you would like it to appear in the Full Name field. Enter your CalWeb e-mail address in the E-mail Address field. Then, click Next.
3. A screen pops up asking for the name of the profile and the location of your configuration files for Netscape on your computer. Leave the values as-is and click Next.
4. A screen comes up with your name and e-mail address filled in. Replace
mail in the Outgoing mail (SMTP) server box with smtp.calweb.com. Click Next.
5. The Mail server user name should already be filled in with your CalWeb login name (i.e.
joeuser). Change the Incoming Mail Server from mail to pop.calweb.com. Make sure that POP3 is dotted, then click Next.
6. Change the News (NNTP) server from
news to either news.calweb.com. Make sure Port is set to 119 and that Secure is unchecked. Click Finish.TOP

Click on New to create a new profile. Then follow the instructions for First Time Configuration to add a new user. Netscape Screen Shot
Click OK.
6. If necessary, click on "SPAM Mail", then click on the arrow pointing up to make sure that the SPAM filtering rule is the first rule processed by Netscape.
7. Click OK to close the Mail Filters screen.

Once this message filter is set up, all e-mail marked as SPAM will be sent directly to the Trash folder.TOP

File Attachments
To send a file attachment
While composing a message, you can click on Attach button and select File... or you can select File, then Attach, then File... . A dialogue box will come up allowing you to select the file that you want to attach to the message.

NOTE: Consider the end user. Large attachments take a long time to both upload and download. Attachments larger than 3MB may be rejected by the mail server.

To open a file attachment
File attachments will appear at the end of the message. If you double-click on the file attachment, Netscape will open up the file in another browser window. Alternatively, you can right-click on the attachment and select Save Link As... . A Save As... window will appear, allowing you to save the attachment to your computer.

Alternatively, you can click on the paperclip icon at the beginning of the message. This will show the file attachments as icons at the bottom of the screen. By double-clicking on the icon, you will open up the attachment. Alternatively, by right-clicking on the icon, it will give you the options of either opening the file attachment or saving the file attachment to your computer.

WARNING! Many computer viruses can be transmitted through file attachments. Before opening a file attachment, be sure you know who is sending you the attachment and if you were expecting the attachment. It is recommended that you have a virus-scanning program installed and the latest anti-virus definitions installed. CalWeb is not responsible for any damage to your computer if you open an virus-infected file.TOP

Common Issues
Message Checking Interval
Click on Edit and select Preferences. If necessary, click on the plus sign next to Mail & Groups. Select Mail Servers, then click on More Options. Make sure that "Check for mail every" is checked, and enter a time interval in minutes. Click OK twice.

Prompt For Password
Click on Edit and select Preferences. If necessary, click on the plus sign next to Mail & Groups. Select Mail Servers, then click on More Options. Make sure "Remember my mail password" is checked. Click OK twice. The next time you check your CalWeb e-mail, you will be prompted for your mail password, however, it will then be saved.

Mail Left On Server
If you are leaving messages on the server: Click on Edit and select Preferences. If necessary, click on the plus sign next to Mail & Groups. Select Mail Servers. Under Mail Server Type, make sure "Leave messages on server after retrieval" is not checked. Click OK twice.

To leave a copy of the message on the server: (not recommended) Click on Edit and select Preferences. If necessary, click on the plus sign next to Mail & Groups. Select Mail Servers. Under Mail Server Type, make sure "Leave messages on server after retrieval" is checked. Click OK twice.

IMPORTANT! If you elect to leave mail on the server, we highly recommend that you periodically check your e-mail box using the CalWeb web mail interface to delete messages that are no longer needed, otherwise excessive disk usage charges will occur. (Note: Be sure to hit the Empty Trash button before logging out of the web mail interface to remove the deleted messages from the Trash folder.)

Hang Up After Downloading
This feature is not supported in Netscape Communicator.

Large Message
Click on Edit and select Preferences. Click on the plus sign next to Advanced. Select Disk Space. In the All Message section, check the "Do not store messages that are larger than" and enter a size in KB. Click OK.

Once this option is activated, whenever you download a message that is larger than the set size, you will see the first few lines of the message followed by: "Truncated! This message exceeded the Maximum Message Size set in Preferences, so we have only downloaded the first few lines from the mail server. Click here to download the rest of the message." When you click on the here, the entire message is downloaded to your computer.

IMPORTANT! This will leave the large messages on our mail server. You should periodically check your mailbox using the CalWeb web mail interface to check and delete the large messages, otherwise excessive disk usage charges will occur. (Note: Be sure to hit the Empty Trash button before logging out of the web mail interface to remove the deleted messages from the Trash folder.)

Message Splitting
Netscape Communicator does not support splitting a large message into sections.

Send Messages Immediately
Netscape Communicator automatically sends out messages when the Send Message button is clicked.

Outside Access to CalWeb's Mail Server
If you are connecting from outside of CalWeb's network in order to access your e-mail, you will need to use your provider's outgoing mail server. This version of Netscape does not support outgoing mail authentication (also known as SMTP Authentication).TOP

Message Headers
Occasionally, it may be necessary for you to send us the complete message headers. These headers contain the complete path that the message took through the Internet rather than just the From, To, Subject, and Date that you see as part of the message. To send us the complete message headers, while in Communicator Messenger, click on View, then Headers, then All. Select the message which you want to forward, then either click on the Forward button or select Message, then Forward. The original message will be forwarded as a file attachment. To restore normal message viewing and turn off the message headers, select View, then Headers, then Normal.TOP
News Configuration
Click on Edit, then Preferences. If necessary, click on the plus sign next to Mail and Groups. For "Discussion group (news) server", enter news.calweb.com. Then, click OK. To access the discussion groups, click on Communicator and select Collabra Discussion Groups. When you select news.calweb.com for the first time, you will have to wait several minutes as the entire list of newsgroups (over 75,000) is downloaded to your computer. You can then subscribe and read the messages in the newsgroups.

Note: This version of Communicator does not support connections to our news server from outside CalWeb.
