Netscape
Communicator 4.0-4.08
Macintosh
Users: While these instructions were written for the Windows
version of Netscape Communicator, most of it also applies to the
Macintosh with some minor changes. In the Preferences screen,
instead of using a Plus for a compressed list and a Minus to
indicate a expanded list, the Macintosh uses an arrow pointed to
the right to indicate a compressed list and a arrow pointed down
for a expanded list.

| File
Attachments |
To send a file
attachment
While composing a message, you can click on Attach
button and select File... or you can select File,
then Attach, then File... . A dialogue box will come
up allowing you to select the file that you want to attach to the
message.
NOTE: Consider
the end user. Large attachments take a long time to both upload
and download. Attachments larger than 3MB may be rejected by the
mail server.
To open a file
attachment
File attachments will appear at the end of the message. If you
double-click on the file attachment, Netscape will open up the
file in another browser window. Alternatively, you can right-click
on the attachment and select Save Link As... . A Save
As... window will appear, allowing you to save the attachment
to your computer.
Alternatively, you can
click on the paperclip icon at the beginning of the message. This
will show the file attachments as icons at the bottom of the
screen. By double-clicking on the icon, you will open up the
attachment. Alternatively, by right-clicking on the icon, it will
give you the options of either opening the file attachment or
saving the file attachment to your computer.
WARNING!
Many computer viruses can be transmitted through file attachments.
Before opening a file attachment, be sure you know who is sending
you the attachment and if you were expecting the attachment. It is
recommended that you have a virus-scanning program installed and
the latest anti-virus definitions installed. CalWeb is not
responsible for any damage to your computer if you open an
virus-infected file.

after retrieval" is checked. Click OK twice.
IMPORTANT!

you periodically check your e-mail box using the CalWeb

needed, otherwise excessive disk usage charges will occur. (Note:

the web mail interface to remove the deleted messages from the
Trash folder.)

Large

by: "Truncated! This message exceeded the Maximum Message
Size set in Preferences, so we have only downloaded the first few
lines from the mail server. Click here to download the rest
of the message." When you click on the here, the
entire message is downloaded to your computer.
IMPORTANT!
This will leave the large messages on our mail server. You should
periodically check your mailbox using the CalWeb
web mail interface to check and delete the large messages,
otherwise excessive disk usage charges will occur. (Note:
Be sure to hit the Empty Trash button before logging out of
the web mail interface to remove the deleted messages from the
Trash folder.)
Message

Netscape Communicator does not support splitting a large message
into sections.
Send
Messages Immediately
Netscape Communicator automatically sends out messages when the
Send Message button is clicked.
Outside
Access to CalWeb's Mail Server
If you are connecting from outside of CalWeb's network in order to
access your e-mail, you will need to use your provider's outgoing
mail server. This version of Netscape does not support outgoing
mail authentication (also known as SMTP Authentication).

| Message
Headers |
Occasionally, it may be
necessary for you to send us the complete message headers. These
headers contain the complete path that the message took through
the Internet rather than just the From, To, Subject, and Date that
you see as part of the message. To send us the complete message
headers, while in Communicator Messenger, click on View,
then Headers, then All. Select the message which you
want to forward, then either click on the Forward button or
select Message, then Forward. The original message
will be forwarded as a file attachment. To restore normal message
viewing and turn off the message headers, select View, then
Headers, then Normal. |
| News
Configuration |
| Click on Edit,
then Preferences. If necessary, click on the plus sign next
to Mail and Groups. For "Discussion group (news)
server", enter news.calweb.com.
Then, click OK. To access the discussion groups, click on
Communicator and select Collabra Discussion Groups. When you
select news.calweb.com
for the first time, you will have to wait several minutes as the
entire list of newsgroups (over 75,000) is downloaded to your
computer. You can then subscribe and read the messages in the
newsgroups.
Note: This
version of Communicator does not support connections to our news
server from outside CalWeb.
