Netscape 3.x Configuration

NOTE: This is an obsolete version of Netscape that is no longer supported by CalWeb Internet Services or Netscape Communications. The information provided here is for reference purposes only. The latest version can be downloaded from Netscape's Home Page. In addition, web pages may not display properly using this version of Netscape, and you will receive a warning about Verisign Certificate Expiration when visiting secure web sites. For more details, see the Netscape or VeriSign sites.
Verifying E-mail and News Account Settings
1. Select Options, then Mail and News Preferences.
2. Click on the Servers tab. The following should be set
  • Outgoing Mail (SMTP) Server: smtp.calweb.com
  • Incoming Mail (POP3) Server: pop.calweb.com
  • POP3 User Name: Your CalWeb login Name (no @calweb.com or .ppp)
  • Under News, for News (NNTP) Server, enter news.calweb.com
3. Click on the Identity tab, and verify the following:
  • Your Name: That name that people will see when you send out e-mail (i.e. Joe User)
  • Your e-mail: E-mail address (i.e. joeuser@calweb.com)
  • Reply-to address: Leave blank.
  • Your organization: Leave blank or enter company name
4. Click OK. Note: You must be directly connected to CalWeb in order to access news using this version of Netscape.TOP
Multiple E-mail Accounts
This version of Netscape supports only one POP3 e-mail account. Multiple accounts are not supported on this version of Netscape.TOP
Spam Filtering
CalWeb employs a Spam filtering system called Spam Assassin which marks suspected Spam messages with the word *****SPAM***** in the subject line. However, this version of Netscape does not support any message filtering, so all messages marked as Spam will remain in the inbox.TOP
File Attachments
To send a file attachment
While composing a new message, click on the Attach or Attachment button. A dialogue box will come up. Click on the Attach File button. You can then select a file to be attached to the message. Once the files are selected, click OK to close the Attachments window.

NOTE: Consider the end user. Large attachments take a long time to both upload and download. Attachments larger than 3MB may be rejected by the mail server.

To open a file attachment
File attachments are located at the bottom of the message. When you double-click on the message, it will automatically open the file. Alternatively, by right-clicking on the attachment, you are given the option of saving or opening the file attachment.

WARNING! Many computer viruses can be transmitted through file attachments. Before opening a file attachment, be sure you know who is sending you the attachment and if you were expecting the attachment. It is recommended that you have a virus-scanning program installed and the latest anti-virus definitions installed. CalWeb is not responsible for any damage to your computer if you open an virus-infected file.

Common Issues
Message Checking Interval
Click on Options, then Mail and News Preferences. Click on the Server tab. By "Check for mail", click on Every button and enter a time in minutes, or click on the Never button. Click OK.

Prompt For Password
Click on Options, then Mail and News Preferences. Click on the Organization tab. Make sure that Remember Password is checked. Click OK. You will be prompted for the password the next time you check your e-mail, and then it will be saved.

Mail Left On Server
If you are leaving messages on the server: Click on Option, then Mail and News Preferences. Click on the Server tab. Make sure that "Removed from the server" button is dotted. Click OK.

To leave a copy of the message on the server: (not recommended) Click on Option, then Mail and News Preferences. Click on the Server tab. Make sure that "Left on the server" button is dotted. Click OK.

IMPORTANT! If you elect to leave mail on the server, we highly recommend that you periodically check your e-mail box using the CalWeb web mail interface to delete messages that are no longer needed, otherwise excessive disk usage charges will occur. (Note: Be sure to hit the Empty Trash button before logging out of the web mail interface to remove the deleted messages from the Trash folder.)

Hang Up After Downloading
This option is not supported in Netscape Navigator

Large Message
Click on Option, then Mail and News Preferences. Click on the Server tab. Click on the size button, and then enter a size in KB. Click OK.

IMPORTANT! This will leave the large messages on our mail server. You should periodically check your mailbox using the CalWeb web mail interface to check and delete the large messages, otherwise excessive disk usage charges will occur. (Note: Be sure to hit the Empty Trash button before logging out of the web mail interface to remove the deleted messages from the Trash folder.)

Message Splitting
This option is not supported on this version of Netscape Navigator.

Send Messages Immediately
Messages are sent immediately in Netscape Navigator.

Outside Access to CalWeb's Mail Server
If you are connecting from outside of CalWeb's network in order to access your e-mail, you will need to use your provider's outgoing mail server. This version of Netscape does not support outgoing mail authentication (also known as SMTP Authentication).TOP

Message Headers
Occasionally, it may be necessary for you to send us the complete message headers. These headers contain the complete path that the message took through the Internet rather than just the From, To, Subject, and Date that you see as part of the message. To send us the complete message headers, click on Options, then Show Headers, then All. Click on Forward to forward the message with the original message as a e-mail attachment. To return to normal message headers, click on Options, then Show Headers, then Normal.
