CalWeb's
SpeedWeb Internet Accelerator
Accelerated dial-up access is here!
CalWeb is pleased to offer
accelerated access for dial-up customers. After a lot of searching, we
think we've found the best product, and at a reasonable cost to our
customers — several dollars below what the competition charges for the
same service!
Our tests have shown us that
this accelerator improves the speed of web surfing by compressing data
between 5 to 10 times more than a normal connection, achieving nearly
DSL-like surfing on a regular dialup! What’s more, setup and use is
incredibly simple and it allows for automatic updates when there is a
new version available. SpeedWeb can also block the annoying pop-up ads
as well as speed up mail transfer.
Sign
Up Today and surf up to 500% faster!
Try it out for a month for just $1. If you like
it, continue to use SpeedWeb for just $3 per month.

| How
does the compression software work? |
The
most common things that are transferred to your computer while you
browse the web is text and graphics. SpeedWeb works with your web
browser's cache to speed up transfer by using lossless compression on
text, html, xml, javascript, and style sheets that are used on a web
page. Proprietary image compression is applied to gif images, jpeg
images and Flash content. In addition, SlipStream also accelerates
e-mail traffic (POP3 and SMTP) using lossless compression.
The statistics on the right
are statistics from an actual SpeedWeb session using SpeedWeb's default
settings. During the session, the technician used Internet Explorer 6
running under Windows XP and Outlook Express 6 using a regular dial-up
modem. The technician downloaded mail, and visited several web-based
message boards, news sites, an on-line retailer to order a DVD, and used
a search engine. As you can see, the technician achieved a 9 times
saving ratio. The chart can be broken down as follows:
- Text-based - This
row contains compression information regarding text-based content.
- Graphics - This row
contains compression information regarding graphical content such as
pictures and illustrations.
- Others - This row
contains information regarding content that is neither text nor
graphical.
- Upstream - This row
lists the total original and compressed amounts of data uploaded to
CalWeb, such as clicking on a link on a web page or filling out a
on-line form.
Your usage may vary, but the
more you use SpeedWeb, the better the ratio gets. You can access the
statistics by right-clicking on the SpeedWeb icon and selecting Statistics.
|
| What's
the trick behind the graphics compression? |
| In order to achieve the
additional compression of the images, the quality of the image is
reduced. If this is a animated image such as a animated GIF picture,
SpeedWeb will only show the first "frame" of that image. Since
many of the graphics are banner advertising, you will probably not
notice the difference, and photographs may be slightly changed. You are
able to adjust the image quality by right-clicking on the SpeedWeb icon
and selecting Settings, then clicking on the Image Quality
tab. You will see a slider allowing you to determine the amount of
compression you want to apply to the image along with actual examples of
the image.
If you are using Internet
Explorer and want to see a picture without any compression applied (such
as a news story photograph or picture from NASA), you can right click on
the image and selecting Show Original Image. The image will then
be re-downloaded without any SpeedWeb compression applied. Selecting Show
All Original Images will reload all of the graphics on a page.
|
| What
cannot be compressed by SpeedWeb? |
SlipStream does NOT speed up
file downloads (over FTP or file sharing programs), streaming
audio/video and HTTPS (secure web sites). |
| How
do I activate SpeedWeb? |
| Signing up for SpeedWeb
couldn't be easier. Here is a quick-start guide:
1. Sign
up for the SpeedWeb service online. This will also allow you to
verify your user name and password.
2. Download the SpeedWeb software for Windows
or Macintosh OSX
to the desktop. Once the download is complete, double-click on the icon
to install the software on your computer.
3. Change your
dial-up access number to the SpeedWeb number. This is a number
that ends in -1856.
4. The first time you run SpeedWeb, you will need to enter in your
CalWeb login name (i.e. joeuser,
no @calweb.com) and password.
SpeedWeb will then be active,
and you will see the icon in your system tray by the clock. On some
Windows platforms a bubble icon will appear when the SlipStream Service
has been established. On all other Windows platforms, you can verify
that SlipStream Service has been established by hovering over the
SlipStream tray icon (you should see a "SlipStream Service
Enabled..." message). You will also notice the SlipStream icon
blinking. SpeedWeb will also automatically load when you start up your
computer.
Detailed install instructions
for Windows and Macintosh
are also available.
|
| Will
it work with my web browser? |
| Speedweb is designed to work
with Internet Explorer 4 or later (Internet Explorer 5 or later is
recommended) or Netscape 4 or later without any modification.
If you are using MyIE2,
you will needs to click on Options, then Proxy, then Use
IE Proxy. For other browsers such as Opera and Mozilla, you must set
the HTTP proxy host to be 127.0.0.1
and the port number to be the local listening port of the SlipStream
Client (5400
by default). Consult your browser's documentation for information on how
this can be done.
