Troubleshooting SpeedWeb
|
| The SpeedWeb software doesn't seem to be working. |
You can tell if SpeedWeb is running if you see the tray icon blink when you run your web browser. In addition, you can hovering over the SlipStream tray icon (you should see a "SlipStream Service Enabled..." message), and for some Windows systems, you will see a balloon indicating that SpeedWeb is active when you connect. If not, check the following.

| Speedweb is running, but web pages don't seem to be coming up. |
Sometimes, the proxy settings need to be reset. To do this, check the Internet Options by following these instructions:

| I can't seem to access the Usenet news server when SpeedWeb is running. |
| You will need to change the server to newsreader.calweb.com and log in using your CalWeb login name (i.e. joeuser, no @calweb.com) and password. |
| Why does my downstream "Bandwidth Savings Ratio" appear to go below 1.0? |
| Accelerating your bandwidth channel incurs a small amount of transmission overhead. In most cases, this overhead is negligible when compared to the actual bandwidth savings provided by SlipStream Web Accelerator.
However, strange interactions between Internet Explorer and certain plugins (such as older versions of the Adobe Acrobat Reader plugin) may cause documents to be unnecessarily downloaded twice. It is important to note that this type of behavior occurs regardless of whether SlipStream Web Accelerator is used. The Accelerator is merely showing the download statistics in these situations. |
| I can't right-click on an image to get the "Original Image" in Internet Explorer. |
| Some web sites disable the right-click using javascript. On other sites, the image in question may be a background image. To see the full quality image, change the image slider to "Full Quality" and press Ctrl-F5 in Internet Explorer. Click here for instructions on changing the image slider. |
| Why is Netscape/Mozilla not working with the Accelerator? |
| The primary reason for Netscape/Mozilla browsers not working is that the proxy setting is not updated properly. We highly recommend users who use Netscape/Mozilla browsers to leave the Accelerator on once your computer is turned on (if it is in your start-up menu, it should be automatically started when you start the computer) and before you browse. Please do not attempt to stop/disable it while you're browsing. Leave it on always for the entire time while you're browsing. If the Accelerator is working properly, when you go to any websites, the Slipstream icon (in the system tray) should be flashing/changing color.
Another alternative is to manually set the HTTP proxy in Netscape. Click on Edit and select Preferences. Open up the Advanced menu and select Proxies. Set the HTTP proxy host to be 127.0.0.1 and the port number to be the local listening port of the SpeedWeb Client (5400 by default). Click OK. |
| Why do some Java-applets (such as certain Java-based games) not work? |
| Older versions of the Java Runtime Environment (JRE) cannot display certain image types (such as 'PNG'). To fix this problem, simply set your image slider to the maximum quality level or upgrade to the newest JRE . |
| Why can’t I load/open some specific websites when the Accelerator is enabled? |
| The websites may be blocked by the Popup-blocker component of the Accelerator. Please disable Block Floating Flash-ads option in the
Popup-blocker settings
. If problem persists, please add the website to the
Popup-blocker White list
.
You can always add the website to the Proxy Exclusion List to bypass the Accelerator. |
| After installing SlipStream, I received a message saying Email Acceleration is disabled. What happened? |
| The SlipStream installer has detected software that may conflict with SlipStream Email Acceleration. It was determined that the safest way to proceed was to not install the SlipStream Email Acceleration. |
| I'm getting an error message when using the SpeedWeb Accelerator. |
