Windows Dialup Networking Instructions


These instructions will allow you to manually set up a dial-up connection to CalWeb. If possible, it is best to use the Internet Connection Wizard to set up your connection to CalWeb.
IMPORTANT! Please verify that the number you are using is a local access number and is entered correctly. (This can be done by checking with the operator or a recent copy of the white pages.) While we will suggest the best possible possible access number, CalWeb Internet Services is not responsible for any toll or phone charges incurred while using our service.
General Settings
The following settings are recommended for Windows to connect to CalWeb Internet over a dial-up connection. Not all options appear on all screens, and some of the wording may be slightly different.
  • Server Assigned IP Address should be dotted.
  • Server Assigned Name Server Address should be dotted.
  • No encryption on the password.
  • PPP Connection should be selected.
  • Use IP Header Compression should be checked.
  • Use Default Gateway on Remote Network should be checked.
  • Windows Domain should be either blank or not checked.
  • Terminal Window and Run Script should not be checked.

Also, unless you are dialing into CalWeb dial-up access number from another area code (i.e. out-of-state), then the phone number to dialed should only be 7 digits long (i.e. 779 9321). If you have call waiting and disable it when you dial into CalWeb, that should also appear. If you see more digits other than the access number on the Connect to window, click on the Dial Properties and check the following:

  • Country/Region: United States of America
  • Area Code: The current area code that you are in (i.e. 916, 530, 209). This is not your zip code.
  • For local calls, dial: and For long distance calls, dial: Should be blank. If you are in a office environment and need to type a number to access an outside line (i.e. 9,) type it in here.
  • For long distance calls, use this calling card: should not be checked.
  • Tone dialing should be dotted.
  • If you have call waiting and wish to disable it while connected to CalWeb, check off To Disable Call Waiting, Dial: and then select *70, from the pull-down list. Otherwise, leave it unchecked.
  • If you are in a area where it is necessary to dial all ten digits, click on the Dialing Rules button and check off Always Dial The Area Code (10 digit dialing). Then, click OK.

Click OK or Close to close out of dialing properties.

Note: If the dialing properties button is not available, go into the properties of your connection and check off Use Area Code and Dialing Properties. Then click OK. TOP

Windows XP (Dial-Up Connection)
1. To start the Network Connections tool, click Start, then Settings (if necessary), then Control Panel
2. If necessary, double-click on Network and Internet Connections.
3. Double-click Network Connections.
4. In the "Network Tasks", double-click Create a new connection. A welcome screen will appear. Click Next.
5. On the "Network Connection Type" screen, select Connect to the Internet, then click Next.
6. On the "Getting Ready" screen, select Set up my connection manually, then click Next.
7. On the "Internet Connection" screen, select Connect using a dial-up modem, then click Next.
8. On the "Connection Name" screen, type CalWeb as the ISP Name, then click Next.
9. On the "Phone Number to Dial" screen, type in the number exactly as it needs to be dialed. Click Next.
10. In the "User name" field, enter your CalWeb login name (also called the username or userid, i.e. joeuser). The login name must be all-lowercase.
11. In the "Password" field, enter your CalWeb password. (Remember: Passwords are case sensitive. blahblah is different from BlahBlah.)
12. Put a check mark in Use this account name and password when anyone connects to the Internet from this computer and Make this the default Internet connection. Click Next.
13. Make sure that Add a shortcut to this connection to my desktop is checked, then click Finish.

Finding The Connection
Because of the various ways that XP can be configured, not all steps will be needed to find your CalWeb connection.

1. Click on Start.
2. If necessary, click on Settings.
3. Click on Control Panel.
4. If necessary, click on Network and Internet Connections.
5. Double-click on Network Connections or Network and Dial-Up Connections.

To modify the connection properties: Right click on the connection icon and select Properties, or click once on the connection icon, then click on File and select Properties.

Creating a shortcut on the desktop: Right click on the connection icon and select Properties or click once on the connection icon, then click on File and select Create Shortcut. You will get a prompt saying "Windows cannot create a shortcut here. Do you want the shortcut to be placed on the desktop instead?" Click Yes. TOP

Windows XP (ADSL PPPoE Connection)
Under ADSL, the connection is treated exactly like a Dial-Up connection with some minor differences. To set up your ADSL connection:

1. Go into the Control Panel by clicking on Start, then Settings (if necessary), then Control Panel.
2. If necessary, double-click on Network and Internet Connections.
3. Double-click on Network Connections.
4. In the "Network Tasks", double-click Create a new connection. A welcome screen will appear. Click Next.
5. On the "Network Connection Type" screen, select Connect to the Internet, then click Next.
6. On the "Getting Ready" screen, select Set up my connection manually, then click Next.
7. On the "Internet Connection" screen, select Connect using a broadband connection that requires a username and password, then click Next.
8. On the "Connection Name" screen, type CalWeb as the ISP Name, then click Next.
9. In the "User name" field, enter your CalWeb login name with @calweb.com at the end of the login name (i.e. This e-mail address is being protected from spambots. You need JavaScript enabled to view it ). The login name must be all-lowercase.
10. In the "Password" field, enter your CalWeb password. (Remember: Passwords are case sensitive. blahblah is different from BlahBlah.)
11. Put a check mark in Use this account name and password when anyone connects to the Internet from this computer and Make this the default Internet connection. Click Next.
12. Make sure that Add a shortcut to this connection to my desktop is checked, then click Finish.

Windows 2000
1. To set up a new dialup networking connection, begin by either right clicking on the My Network Places icon and choosing Properties or by clicking on the Start button, going to Settings, and then clicking on Network and Dialup Connections. Either method will open the "Network and Dialup Connections" window.
2. Double-click on the Make New Connection icon.
3. You will see a screen that says "Welcome to the Internet Connection Wizard". Click Next.
4. You will see a "Network Connection Type" box. Select Dial-up to the Internet, then click Next.
5. You will then see a "Welcome to the Internet Connection Wizard". Select the last option, I want to setup my Internet connection manually, or I want to connect through a local area network (LAN). Click Next.
6. In this next window, select I connect through a phone line and modem. Click Next.
7. You are then prompted for the dial-up. Enter the dial-up number used to access CalWeb and click Next.
8. In the "User name" field, enter your CalWeb login name (also called the username or userid, i.e. joeuser). The login name must be all-lowercase.
9. In the "Password" field, enter your Calweb password. (Remember: Passwords are case sensitive. blahblah is different from BlahBlah.)
10. You are prompted for a name for this connection. Type in CalWeb, then click Next.
11. You are prompted to set up a e-mail account. For now, select No, then click Next.
12. You will then complete the setup wizard. Uncheck the box that says Connecting Immediately to the Internet. Click Finish.
13. Back at the "Network and Dialup Connections" window, right click on the CalWeb icon again and this time choose Create Shortcut from the menu. That will give you a message stating that "windows can not create a shortcut here, would you like the shortcut placed on the desktop instead." Answer Yes and then close the window. You will now see a shortcut on your desktop for your dialup to CalWeb.

Finding The Connection
Click on Start, then Settings, then Network and Dial-Up Connections. You should see one or more connection icons. The connection should be labeled "CalWeb", although it may also have the name of "My Connection" or "Connection to xxx-xxxx".

To modify the connection properties: Right click on the connection icon and select Properties, or click once on the connection icon, then click on File and select Properties.

Windows Me
Part One: Configuring Dial-Up Networking
1. Click on Start, click Settings, then Dial-Up Networking.
2. Double-click on Make New Connection.
3. For the name of the computer you are dialing, type CalWeb. Verify that the modem you are using is selected in the "Select A Modem" field and press Next.
4. Enter the correct area code and phone number of the CalWeb phone number that is local to you. Click on Next, then Finish. You should be back in the Dial-Up Networking window with a new icon for the connection you've created.
5. If you want to create a shortcut to CalWeb on your desktop, click once on the CalWeb icon, then select File, then Create Shortcut. You will be asked to create a shortcut on the desktop. Click Yes.

Part Two: Opening A Connection
1. Double-click the CalWeb icon in the Dial-Up Networking window.
2. In the "Username" field, enter your CalWeb login name (also called the username or userid, i.e. joeuser). The login name must be all-lowercase.
3. In the "Password" field, enter your password. (Remember: Passwords are case sensitive. blahblah is different from BlahBlah.)
4. If available, check the Save Password box.
5. Click on Connect.

Finding The Connection
Click on Start, click Settings, then Dial-Up Networking. You should see one or more connection icons. The connection should be labeled "CalWeb", although it may also have the name of "My Connection" or "Connection to xxx-xxxx".

Windows 98/95
These instructions assume that you have Windows 95/98 up and running on your system, you have the modem installed and working properly, and you have your Windows 95/98 CD-ROM or setup disks with you.

Part One: Getting Dial-Up Networking (DUN) installed on your machine
If you have Windows 98, please SKIP to " Part Three: Configuring Dial-Up Networking".

1. To determine is DUN is installed on your system, double-click on My Computer. If you see a folder called Dial-Up Networking, skip to " Part Two: Installing and Configuring TCP/IP".
2. Click on Start, then Settings, then Control Panel.
3. In the "Control Panel", double-click on Add/Remove Programs icon.
4. In the "Add/Remove Programs" dialog box that appears, select the Windows Setup tab.
5. In the "Components" window, single-click on the Communications line (NOT the check box) and then click on the Details button in the lower-right part of the window.
6. Put a check in the Dial-Up Networking box, click the OK button to close that window, and then click the OK button in the next window. This returns you to the Control Panel.

Part Two: Installing and Configuring TCP/IP
1. From the Control Panel (Start -> Settings -> Control Panel), double-click on the Network icon and select the Configuration tab.
2. Under "The following network components are installed", check for TCP/IP or TCP/IP -> Dial-Up Adapter. If TCP/IP is listed, click Cancel all the way out and skip to " Part Three: Configuring Dial-Up Networking".
3. To install TCP/IP, select Protocol, click Add, select Microsoft, and select TCP/IP in the box on the right. Click OK.
4. TCP/IP should now appear in the "The following network components are installed" window. Click OK.
5. The computer will then load some components from your CD. When asked if it should restart the computer, click Yes.
6. Once your computer has rebooted, close the Control Panel window and proceed to " Part Three: Configuring Dial-Up Networking".

Part Three: Configuring Dial-Up Networking
1. Double-click My Computer, then double-click Dial-Up Networking.
2. Double-click on Make New Connection.
3. For the name of the computer you are dialing, type CalWeb. Verify that the modem you are using is selected in the Select A Modem field and press Next.
4. Enter the correct area code and phone number of the CalWeb phone number that is local to you. Click on Next, then Finish. You should be back in the Dial-Up Networking window with a new icon for the connection you've created.
5. Click once on the CalWeb icon, then click on File and select Properties.
6. In the dialog box that appears, click on the Server Types button in the lower right part of the box or the Server Types tab. A Server Types dialog box will appear. Enter the following information:

  • Windows 95 only: Dial-Up Server: PPP: Windows 95, Windows NT 3.5, Internet
  • Windows 98 only: Dial-Up Server: PPP: Internet, Windows NT Server, Windows 98
  • Uncheck Log On To Network.
  • Check Enable Software Compression.
  • Uncheck NetBeui and IPX/SPX Compatible.
  • Make sure that TCP/IP is checked.
8. Click on the TCP/IP Settings button by the TCP/IP check box. Check the following:
  • Check Server Assigned IP Address.
  • Check Server Assigned Name Server Addresses.
  • Make sure Use IP Header Compression and Use Default Gateway on Remote Network is checked.
9. Click OK, then click OK again.
10. If you want to create a shortcut on your desktop, click once on the CalWeb icon, then select File and select Create Shortcut. Windows will warn you that, "It cannot create a shortcut here." Click Yes.

Part Four: Opening A Connection
1. Double-click the CalWeb icon in the Dial-Up Networking window.
2. In the "Username" field, enter your CalWeb login name (also called the username or userid, i.e. joeuser). The login name must be all-lowercase.
3. In the "Password" field, enter your password. (Remember: Passwords are case sensitive. blahblah is different from BlahBlah.)
4. If available, check the Save Password box.
5. Click on Connect.

Windows NT 4.0
1. From Control Panel, select Network. Within Network, select Services and then select Add. Highlight Remote Access Services and follow the online installation procedure. Once RAS is installed, you can set up the dialer.
2. From My Computer, double-click the Dial-Up Networking. This will bring up the phonebook. If the phonebook is empty, you will be prompted to create a new entry, otherwise, select New to create an entry for CalWeb.
3. Enter the name for your new entry, usually CalWeb, and click Next.
4. Put a mark in I Am Calling The Internet and click Next.
5. Enter the phone number to dial to connect to CalWeb and click Next.
6. Click Finish to complete the new phone number entry.
7. Click More and select Edit Entry and Modem Properties.
8. Click on the Server tab and make sure that TCP/IP is checked. IPX/SPX Compatible and NetBEUI should not be checked.
9. Click on TCP/IP Settings and make sure that Server Assigned IP Address, Server Assigned Name Server Address, Use IP Header Compression, and Use Default Gateway On Remote Network are all checked or dotted.
10. IMPORTANT! Select the Security tab. Make sure Accept any authentication including clear text is marked and click OK.
11. Select Dial to begin your connection to CalWeb.
  • Under Username, enter your CalWeb login name (i.e. joeuser). It must be all lowercase
  • Under Password, enter your password. (Click the box if you want to save your password.) Passwords are case sensitive
  • Leave the Domain Name field blank.
12. Select OK. Your system will call and connect to CalWeb. Once RAS connects and authenticates, you are ready to start your client applications and begin exploring the Internet.

Password Problems? Double-click My Computer, then double-click Dial-Up Networking. Select the CalWeb phone book entry. Click More and select Edit Entry And Modem Properties. Click the Security tab, click Unsave Password, then click OK.

If you still have problems logging in, try this. Double-click My Computer, then double-click Dial-Up Networking. Select the CalWeb phone book entry. Click More and select Edit Entry And Modem Properties. Click the Security tab and switch from None to Generic Login. Click OK. TOP

Disconnecting from CalWeb
When you are connected to CalWeb, a small icon with two blinking screens appears in the lower-right corner of the screen near the clock. To disconnect from CalWeb, either double-click on the icon, then click on the Disconnect button, or right click on the icon and select Disconnect. TOP

What Are My TCP/IP Settings?
Sometimes, it is necessary to determine what your current IP address is or the DNS servers being used while diagnosing your CalWeb connection. Follow one of the methods below. You will need to be connected to CalWeb to get the correct information.

While connected with Windows XP
You can determine your current IP address by double-clicking on the two computers in the lower-right corner of the screen. A connection status screen should come up. Click on the Details tab. A summary of the connection comes up. Your current IP while connected to CalWeb is labeled Client IP address. Click Close to close this window.

WINIPCFG (Windows 95, 98, Me)
WINIPCFG is a graphical interface used on Windows 95, 98, and Me to determine information about your Internet Connection. By default, it is not included with Windows 2000 or later, but a similar utility can be downloaded from Microsoft. See the WNTIPCFG instructions below.

To use WINIPCFG, click on Start and select Run. Type in winipcfg and click OK. You will see a screen come up with information about your current CalWeb connection. If you see "0.0.0.0" as the IP address, then you will need to click on the down arrow and select PPP Adapter. More information about your connection, including DNS numbers, can be found by clicking on the More Info >> button. Clock OK to exit out of the program.

IPCONFIG (Windows NT, 2000, XP, and later)
IPCONFIG is a command line interface to determine your TCP/IP settings for your Internet connection. To use the program:

1. Click on Start and select Run.
2. Type in command and click OK. A command window will come up.
3. Type in ipconfig /all | more to display information about your Internet connection.
4. To exit the command window, type exit.

WNTIPCFG (Windows 2000, XP, and later)
WNTIPCFG is the graphical equivalent of WINIPCFG for Windows 2000 and later. You can download the utility from Microsoft's web site , and once it is installed, you can run it like WINIPCFG.

To use WNTIPCFG, click on Start and select Run. Type in wntipcfg and click OK. You will see a screen come up with information about your current CalWeb connection. If you see "0.0.0.0" as the IP address, then you will need to click on the down arrow and select PPP Adapter. More information about your connection, including DNS numbers, can be found by clicking on the More Info >> button. Clock OK to exit out of the program.
