First known PITSENBERGER/PITSENBARGER in U.S. Will signed 4-12-1781. Will recorded in Woodstock, Shenandoah Co., VA, August 1781. Property inventory dated March 1782. Served as Private in Michael Reader's Co., VA, Revolutionary War.
It is believed the original spelling of the name was PITZENBERGER and the family may have originated in Switzerland but was probably living in the Palatine (Hesse Darmstadt?) at time Abraham immigrated. There is a record in the LDS IGI (Germany) of a Johann Adam Pitzenberger baptized in 1725 in Hesse-Darmstadt. No further information on Adam's link to Abraham.

Birth places of children born before 1777 was probably Lancaster Co., PA. It is known that descendants of these families spoke German in the home well into the 19th century.

Jacob sold his share in the family farm in Shenandoah Co., VA in 1794. Jacob
moved to Bullskin Township, Fayette Co., PA, sometime before 1800 where he was
counted in 1810 census. In abt 1811, Jacob moved his family to Randolph
Township, Montgomery Co., OH, where he paid taxes in 1816 and was counted in
the 1820 census. Jacob moved to Wayne Township, Darke Co., OH, just bef 1830.
His unindexed will, discovered in May 1990 bound inside his son Jacob's will
at the Darke Co., OH, Court House, was dated 31 July 1837.

appears to have been that brought by Malinda Strader into her marriage to David
Lair. Malinda died and David remarried to Sarah Ann Catherine Rodabaugh.
Sarah was Margaret's granddaughter.
Margaret's date of death is from her grave marker in Yoder Cemetery,
Darke Co., OH, which reads "Margaret wife of J. Pitsenbarger d. 3-25-1848 in
her 79th year" (from CEMETERY INSCRIPTIONS, Darke Co., OH, Vol. II, compiled
by Anita Short and Ruth Bowers, p. 200).

father and siblings moved to Darke Co. until abt 1841 when he moved to Neave
Twp, Darke Co., OH, where he died and was buried.

story.

which task occupied him until January 1859. Henry was also named guardian of
his sister Phoebe's minor daughters Margaret and Delila Fetter in May 1842.

Greer assisted John in making his mark. John probably died in late January.
His grave marker was later reset in cement covering the precise date of death.

Peter Pitsenbarger joined John Fry in Greene Co., TN, about 1803. In c1828,
he moved to Wayne Co., IN, with all of his children but eldest son John,
where he was counted in the 1830 census living in Wayne Twp. Also in Wayne
Twp, Wayne Co., IN, were his daughter Elizabeth Shaffer and son Abraham.
Peter was the first to be buried in the Yoder Cemetery (originally known as
the Pitsenbarger Cem).

After Peter's death in 1837, Mary remained in Darke Co. and was counted in
the 1840 census. By the 1850 census, she had joined her relatives
in IN and was counted in District 9, Carroll Co., IN, age 62 with daughters
Phebe and Malinda.
Her date of birth was previously calculated from her grave marker "died
May 22, 1853, 73y 9m 29d", but Zion-Pine Church records from Shenandoah Co.,
VA, show a Maria Magdalena, d/o Johannes Frey & Philippe, born 23 Jul 1789 and
baptized 8 Sep 1789 with Christian & Maria Magdalena Pantz (probably a cognate
for Pence) as sponsors. Whether the grave marker or the church records are in
error cannot be determined from the evidence available. It may be significant
that the computer-calculated birth date based on her age at death differs from
the church record ONLY in the year born. Is it possible that Molly WAS
baptized in 1789 and the year of her birth was entered incorrectly in the
church records. But that notion is countered by her age 62 in the 1850 census.
My instinct is to trust the church records, but other descendants cling to
her being born a decade earlier.
Exact place of death is unknown. It is possible she died where she was
counted in the 1850 census, that is, in Carroll Co., IN. However, her sons
John & Abraham lived in Warren Twp, Clinton Co., IN, and she was buried in
that location.

An old reading of a stone in the Yoder Cem was originally taken for evidence
that Malinda died in 1856. However, a Clark family researcher explained that
Malinda married in Carroll Co., IN, and died as shown in this record. The
couple moved with other Clark families to Butler Co., IA, then by 1860 to
Gentry Co., MO, after which (by 1864) they returned to OH and lived in Gibson
Twp, Mercer Co., OH, in 1880.

Reg. Missouri Voluntary Cavalry. He later served in Company F, 152nd Reg. of
Ohio National Guard (in which a number of other Darke Co. men served including
Peter Pitsenbarger and Peter's nephew Francis Marion "Franz" Pitsenberger).

Per 1830 Census: Philip lived in Wayne Township, Darke Co., OH. He was
between 40 & 50 years old (born ca. 1780). He had 1 boy & 2 girls under 5, 1
girl under 10, 3 boys & 1 girl under 15, and 1 boy under 20, wife under 40.
Died? before 1840. Last known reference to Philip was that he paid taxes in
Shelby Co., OH, in 1834. Descendants listed here are culled from stray
Pitsenbargers not attributable to other known families.

This first name of Philip's wife is conjecture. No record of marriage found.
There was a Philip Pitsenbarger listed in the 1820 census in Jackson Twp,
Jackson Co., OH. This census was destroyed and what we have was reconstructed
from tax lists. On the line for Philip's name, there is no indication of his
or his wife's age or how many children they had - the line is blank.

Sarah's lineage is uncertain. Some place her as a daughter of Jacob but
she is not in his 1837 will. Information on her descendants comes from
"Hennan's Choice" (c1970) where more complete information is available.

This Jacob was first brought to my attention by an 1860 Richland Co., WI,
census entry: Jacob Pitsenbergen-42mOH, Indiana-30fOH, Theresa-9fIN,
Thomas-4mWI, William-2mWI. I later found the couple in the 1850 Hamilton
Co., IN, census: Jacob-28mOH, Pudiana-20fOH, no children. Jacob's age
increased by four years more than expected, but I am using his age given in
1860 to indicate when he was probably born for this record.
Another Jacob came to my attention in the Montgomery Co., OH Marriage books.
I ASSUMED he was Philip's child since he could not be fit into other known
families. However, I should note that in the 1850 Darke Co. census, there
was Jacob Puffenbarger-23mP and Jane-22fO living in Greenville Twp who may be
this couple. They had no children in 1850. The marriage record in question
showed Jacob Pitzenbarger to Rebecca Jane Piatt 7-18-1846. I am fairly
certain Jacob's surname was misunderstood in the marriage records and should
have been Puffenbarger.

was said to have married a William B. York (s/o Alfred & Sarah (Brown) York)
10-4-1898.
